Vidimax Hardware Installation Guide

System Overview #

The VidiMax system consists of two hardware components: the VidiMax Server and the VidiMax Display Terminal Unit (DTU). The server is the central controller – it hosts the web interface, manages all connected displays, runs automation tasks, and communicates with connected Linortek devices. The Display Terminal Unit is the client device that connects to a screen and renders the content the server sends to it.

This guide covers the physical installation of both components. After completing the steps in this guide, refer to the VidiMax User Manual for software configuration.

System Components

ComponentDescription
VidiMax ServerA compact Mini-ITX PC that acts as the central controller for the entire system. Hosts the web-based management interface, manages all display content, and communicates with connected Linortek devices. Can be placed on a desktop or shelf, or mounted using a compatible Mini-ITX bracket or enclosure.
Display Terminal Unit (DTU)A compact client device that connects to a display screen via HDMI. Powered over Ethernet (PoE) – no separate power cable required. Receives content from the VidiMax Server and renders it on the connected screen.
Linortek Devices (optional)Bell controllers, tone generators, relay controllers, and other Linortek accessories that connect to the VidiMax Server via Ethernet. These are configured separately and are not covered in this guide.

Deployment Scenarios

VidiMax supports three deployment scenarios. They can also be combined – for example, using Interface 1 for remote administration while running displays on a dedicated network through Interface 2.

Scenario A – Standalone (No External Network)

In this scenario the VidiMax Server operates entirely without connecting to an existing network. The server provides its own DHCP network from its DHCP port (Interface 2), and all display terminals and Linortek devices connect to a PoE switch on that port. The server is managed locally using a display and keyboard/mouse connected directly to the server hardware.

  • Best for: environments where connecting to an existing IT network is not desired or not possible.
  • Requirements: a display and keyboard/mouse connected directly to the server. A PoE switch connected to Interface 2 for powering DTUs and Linortek devices.

Scenario B – Network Connected

In this scenario the VidiMax Server connects to your existing LAN via Interface 1 and also uses Interface 2 to provide a dedicated managed network for display terminals and Linortek devices. The server is administered through a web browser on any networked computer. This is the most common deployment for larger installations where a clean separation between the managed device network and the main LAN is preferred.

  • Best for: most installations. Allows remote administration from any networked computer without needing a dedicated monitor or keyboard at the server.
  • Requirements: an available Ethernet port on your network switch or router for Interface 1, and a PoE switch connected to Interface 2 for displays and devices.
TIP:  Scenarios can be combined. For example, Interface 1 for remote web administration while Interface 2 provides a dedicated network for displays and devices.

Scenario C – Network Connected, Displays on Main LAN (ETH2 Not Used)

In this scenario the VidiMax Server connects to your existing LAN via Interface 1 only. Interface 2 (ETH2) is left unused. Display terminals and Linortek devices are connected to the same LAN as the server and are discovered automatically. This is the simplest setup when your existing network already has PoE switching and all devices can be placed on the same network segment as the server.

  • Best for: environments where the existing network infrastructure already supports PoE and all devices can be placed on the same VLAN or network segment as the server.
  • Requirements: an available Ethernet port on your network switch or router for Interface 1. A PoE-capable switch on the same network for powering DTUs and Linortek devices. ETH2 is left disconnected.

VidiMax Server Installation #

The VidiMax Server is a Mini-ITX PC. It is compact, fanless or low-noise, and designed to be installed in a variety of locations including server rooms, AV closets, back-of-rack spaces, or on a desk or shelf near the installation site.

Hardware Ports

Familiarise yourself with the server’s physical ports before beginning installation.

PortLabel / LocationPurpose
Ethernet – Interface 1ETH1Uplink / LAN – connects the server to your existing network or internet. Use this port to allow remote web-based administration from networked computers.
Ethernet – Interface 2ETH2DHCP / managed network (optional) – acts as a DHCP server for devices connected directly to this port. Use this port when you want to run displays and Linortek devices on a dedicated network segment isolated from your main LAN. If your displays and devices are already on your existing network, ETH2 is not required – the server will discover them through Interface 1.
Display portDisplayPort or HDMI (varies by model)Direct display output for local administration. Use this in Scenario A (standalone) or when initial setup is required without a network connection.
USB ports (×2)USB-A portsConnect a keyboard and mouse for local administration. Only required in Scenario A or for initial setup without a network connection.
Power inputDC power jack or IEC connector (varies by model)Connect the included power supply. Do not use a third-party power supply unless specified by your distributor.

Placement

The VidiMax Server can be installed on a desktop, shelf, or inside an AV cabinet. Choose a location that meets the following requirements:

  • Ventilation – ensure there is adequate airflow around the unit. Do not place it in an enclosed space with no airflow, directly against a wall on all sides, or under heavy objects.
    • Cable reach – the unit must be within cable reach of a power outlet, your network switch (for Scenario B), and the PoE switch that serves the display terminals.
      • Access – the unit should be accessible for maintenance, cable management, and visual inspection of indicator lights.
      • Environment – install in a dry, indoor location. Avoid areas with excessive dust, moisture, direct sunlight, or heat sources nearby.
CAUTION:  Operating temperature, humidity limits, and physical dimensions are listed in the product specification sheet included in the box. Update this document with your specific model’s values when available.

Server Installation – Step by Step

Step 1 – Position the unit

  1. Place the VidiMax Server on a stable, flat surface such as a desk, shelf, or top of an AV rack.
  2. Ensure there is at least 5 cm (2 inches) of clearance on all sides for airflow.
  3. Orient the unit so that all ports are accessible and cables can be routed neatly.

Step 2 – Connect the PoE switch (Interface 2 – DHCP port)

  1. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to Interface 2 (ETH2) on the VidiMax Server.
  2. Connect the other end to the uplink port of your PoE switch.
  3. The PoE switch’s access ports will later be used to connect Display Terminal Units and Linortek devices.
NOTE:  Do not power on the PoE switch yet. Connect the display terminals first (see Chapter 3), then power everything on in the correct order described in Section 2.5.

Step 3 – Connect to your network (Scenario B only)

  1. Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to Interface 1 (ETH1, the uplink port) on the VidiMax Server.
  2. Connect the other end to an available port on your network switch or router.
  3. The server will obtain an IP address from your network’s DHCP server automatically on first boot. A static IP can be configured later through the web interface – see the VidiMax User Manual, Section 10.3.

Step 4 – Connect a local display and keyboard (Scenario A or initial setup)

Skip this step if you are using Scenario B and will access the server through a web browser on your network.

  1. Connect a monitor or display to the server’s display port using an appropriate cable (DisplayPort or HDMI depending on model).
  2. Connect a USB keyboard to one of the USB ports.
  3. Connect a USB mouse to the second USB port.
NOTE:  The display and keyboard connected to the server are for administering the server itself – this is not a display terminal. Do not use the same screen for both purposes.

Step 5 – Connect power

  1. Connect the included power supply to the power input on the VidiMax Server.
  2. Plug the power cable into a grounded power outlet or a UPS (recommended).
  3. Do not power on yet – complete the display terminal connections first.
CAUTION:  Always use the power supply included with the unit. Using an incorrect power supply may damage the hardware and will void the warranty.

Power-On Sequence

Power on the system in this order to ensure the server is ready before the display terminals attempt to connect:

  1. Power on the VidiMax Server.
  2. Wait approximately 30 seconds for the server to fully boot.
  3. Power on the PoE switch.
  4. The Display Terminal Units will receive power from the PoE switch and begin connecting to the server automatically.
NOTE:  The Display Terminal Units communicate with the server over the network. If the PoE switch is powered on before the server has finished booting, the terminals may display a connection error on first start. This resolves itself automatically once the server is ready – no action is needed.

Display Terminal Unit Installation #

The VidiMax Display Terminal Unit (DTU) is a compact client device that connects to a display screen and renders content sent from the VidiMax Server. Each DTU is powered entirely over its Ethernet cable using Power over Ethernet (PoE) – no separate power supply or power outlet is required at the screen location.

Hardware Ports

PortPurpose
Ethernet (RJ-45)Connects the DTU to the network and provides PoE power. This single cable carries both the data connection and the power supply for the unit. Connect to a PoE port on a switch that has network access to the VidiMax Server – either on the dedicated managed network (Interface 2) or on your main LAN (Scenario C).
HDMIConnects the DTU to the display screen. Use the included HDMI cable. The DTU outputs video and audio to the screen over this connection.

Power over Ethernet (PoE) Requirements

The Display Terminal Unit is powered exclusively over its Ethernet cable. A PoE power source is required. You have two options:

Option A – PoE Switch (recommended for multiple DTUs)

A PoE-capable network switch provides both network connectivity and power to all connected DTUs simultaneously through a single cable per unit. This is the recommended option when installing two or more display terminals.

  • Ensure the switch supports IEEE 802.3af (PoE) or IEEE 802.3at (PoE+). Confirm the required standard with your product datasheet.
  • Connect the switch’s uplink or WAN port to Interface 2 (LAN port) on the VidiMax Server, or to your main network switch if using Scenario C (displays on main LAN).
  • Connect each DTU to an available PoE access port on the switch.

Option B – PoE Power Injector / Adapter (for a single DTU)

A PoE power injector (also called a PoE adapter or midspan injector) can power a single DTU without requiring a PoE switch. The injector is inserted between a standard Ethernet port and the DTU’s Ethernet cable.

  • Connect the injector’s data-in port to any available Ethernet port on a switch that has network access to the VidiMax Server – either Interface 2’s PoE switch or your main network switch (Scenario C).
  • Connect the injector’s data+power-out port to the DTU’s Ethernet port.
  • Power the injector from a standard power outlet.
WARNING:  Do not attempt to power the Display Terminal Unit from a non-PoE Ethernet port. The unit requires PoE to operate and will not function without it.

Placement and Mounting

The Display Terminal Unit is designed to be mounted directly behind or underneath the display screen, keeping the installation clean and cable runs short. Most DTU installations use one of the following mounting methods:

  • Adhesive or bracket mount – the DTU can be mounted using adhesive strips or a small shelf bracket to the back or underside of the display frame.
  • Surface mount – the DTU can be placed on a shelf or surface directly below or behind the display if concealment is not required.
TIP:  Keep the Ethernet cable run between the PoE switch and the DTU as short as practical. Maximum recommended Ethernet cable run length is 100 metres (328 feet) per the 802.3 standard.

Display Terminal Unit Installation – Step by Step

Step 1 – Mount the DTU

  1. Decide on the mounting method appropriate for your screen and location.
  2. If surface mounting, place the DTU on a shelf or secure it to the back of the display frame using the appropriate method.
  3. Ensure the HDMI and Ethernet ports are accessible for cable connection.

Step 2 – Connect the HDMI cable

  1. Connect one end of the included HDMI cable to the HDMI port on the DTU.
  2. Connect the other end to an available HDMI input on the display screen.
  3. Note the HDMI input number on the screen (e.g. HDMI 1, HDMI 2) – you will need to select this input on the screen’s menu after powering on.

Step 3 – Connect the Ethernet cable

  1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the DTU.
  2. Route the cable to the PoE switch. Use cable clips, conduit, or cable trays to keep the run tidy and protected.
  3. Connect the other end to an available PoE port on the switch.
  4. Do not power on the PoE switch yet – complete all DTU connections before powering on.

Step 4 – Power on

Once all DTUs are physically connected, power on the system in the sequence described in Section 2.5:

  1. Power on the VidiMax Server first. Wait 30 seconds for it to fully boot.
  2. Power on the PoE switch. Each DTU will receive power through its Ethernet cable and begin booting automatically.
  3. Switch the display screen’s input to the HDMI port connected to the DTU.
  4. Within 30–60 seconds of the PoE switch powering on, each DTU should connect to the VidiMax Server and begin displaying the default Time & Date slate (or the configured default content if already set up).
NOTE:  If a DTU does not appear in the VidiMax display list after 2–3 minutes, refer to Section 5 (Troubleshooting).
